Oral History Record

Reflections from the Field

Verbatim interview excerpts recorded during the St John of God Secondary School, Awka LGA deployment debrief.

01 - Arrival & Posting

What was your first reaction to your posting?

"I was posted to Dekina and, honestly, my first reaction was mild panic — I'd never been to Kogi and didn't know a single person there. But I told myself this was exactly the kind of year I needed, one that would push me out of Enugu and Nsukka."

02 - Redeployment Choice

Did you ever think of seeking redeployment?

"I considered requesting redeployment closer to home in my first week, mostly out of homesickness, but a senior corps member at the school convinced me to give it a month before deciding. I never ended up applying."

03 - Geographic Context

What did you know about the area before arriving?

"Almost nothing — I knew Kogi was called the "Confluence State" from secondary school geography, and that was about it."

04 - PPA Reality

What did you discover about your PPA?

"The school had almost no functioning library — just a locked storeroom with a few torn textbooks. The community was warm and welcoming, but education resources were clearly stretched thin."

Community Bonds

Important People Met During Service

The local guides, peers, and mothers who made unfamiliar territory feel like home.
  • Mr. Adeyemi The school's vice principal, who became something of a mentor.
  • Tobi Adekunle Who partnered with me on the library project.
  • Mama Ngozi A food seller near the school who fed half the corps members in town.
  • Health

    Polio Vaccine Sensitization Campaign

The library now has over 450 books in circulation and is used daily by an average of 60 students. The school has committed to maintaining it after my service year ends.

"That resourcefulness exists everywhere, even where infrastructure doesn't. Dekina had far less than Nsukka in terms of facilities, but the willingness of teachers, parents, and students to make something work from very little was humbling."

Ethos & Civic Duty

Core Values in Practice

Self-Reliance

Dignity of Labour

Testing Service Ethos

Which core value was most tested during your service year?

“My Discipline was most tested. There were weeks the book-sorting felt tedious and progress seemed invisible, and it was tempting to deprioritize it for CDS activities that got more visible recognition. I kept a simple weekly log to hold myself accountable, and finishing it taught me that the most valuable service work rarely looks impressive while you’re doing it.”

Guidance to Next Cohorts

Advice to incoming corps members?

"Find the one unglamorous problem nobody else wants to deal with — that's usually where you can actually make a dent."

Retrospective Perspective

What would you do differently?

"I'd start the library project in my first month instead of my third — I lost valuable time being cautious when I could have been building momentum."
