I was posted to Dekina and, honestly, my first reaction was mild panic — I'd never been to Kogi and didn't know a single person there. But I told myself this was exactly the kind of year I needed, one that would push me out of Enugu and Nsukka.

Project Details

Reflections about this Project

Project information gathered during the Community Secondary School, Dekina LGA deployment.

01 - The Need

What problem, opportunity or community need did you identify?

"The school had over 600 students and no working library — just a dusty storeroom with outdated, damaged textbooks nobody could borrow."

02 - The Contribution

What contribution or project did you undertake?

"Led a full restoration of the school's library: sorted and repaired existing books, sourced new donations, and set up a simple borrowing system students could actually use."

03 - Motivation

Why did you decide to act?

"I noticed students struggling with comprehension exercises simply because they'd never had consistent access to books outside class. It felt like the most useful thing I could realistically fix in a year."

04 - Approach

How did you plan and execute the contribution?

"Spent the first month cataloguing what existed, then wrote to three NGOs and my university's alumni association requesting book donations. Recruited five students as "library prefects" to manage daily lending once it opened."

05 - Support & Partners

Who supported or partnered with you?

"Tobi, a fellow corps member, the school's PTA, and a Lagos-based NGO called Bookworm Nigeria that donated roughly 300 books"

06 - Challenges

What challenges did you encounter and how did you respond?

"Funding for shelving was the biggest issue — we had books but nowhere sturdy to put them. The PTA eventually agreed to fund basic wooden shelves after I presented a simple cost breakdown at their meeting."

07 - Resources

What resources were mobilised?

"₦285,000 was raised from PTA contributions, 300+ donated books, volunteer labour from five students and two other corps members"

08 - Evidence

What evidence or records of the project still exist?

"Photos of the library before and after, a handover document signed by the vice principal, and a short write-up published in the school's termly newsletter"
